Frequently Asked Questions
What is matrescence?
Matrescence is the developmental journey of becoming a mother, encompassing the profound physical, psychological, emotional, and social changes that transform a person into a mother. Coined by anthropologist Dana Raphael in the 1970s and later popularized by Dr. Alexandra Sacks and Dr. Aurélie Athan, it's often compared to adolescence for its significant shifts in identity, values, and relationships. This process occurs for women who give birth, adopt, or become mothers through surrogacy, and it normalizes the challenges and changes associated with this life transition. You can learn more through Matrescence NZ.
Who are your sessions for?
My sessions are for all mothers, in all stages of matrescence — whether you’re pregnant, postpartum, or years into motherhood and still navigating change. Each session is personalised to meet you where you’re at.
What can we talk about in a session?
Anything that feels heavy or unclear. Common themes include identity shifts, overwhelm and mental load, relationships, confidence in parenting, returning to work, or simply finding space to reconnect with yourself.
How are sessions delivered?
You can choose between:
* In-person sessions in a calm, private Ashburton space
* In-home sessions (Ashburton area)
* Online sessions (nationwide)
Each option is designed to make support accessible and comfortable for you.
How long are sessions?
Sessions are 60 minutes, giving us time to explore what’s on your mind and work toward clarity and balance.
What is the cost?
Each 1:1 session is $140, payable by bank transfer on the day.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly using my online booking link or get in touch if you’d like to talk first.
Do you work with fathers or partners?
May She Flourish sessions are designed specifically for mothers, so I don’t currently offer individual sessions for fathers or partners.
However, if you’d like a support person to join you during one of your sessions, they (or any other support person) are very welcome.
Are sessions confidential?
Yes. As a Registered Social Worker, I adhere to the professional standards of confidentiality, ethics, and supervision required by the Social Workers Registration Board of New Zealand. Your privacy and trust are always respected.
Do you offer acute or crisis mental health support?
